Major & Minor

Major Requirements

Requirement Course Number and Title
1. One quarter course in sociology at the 100 or 200-level (This excludes Sociology 101 and 226.)
2. Three methods/statistics courses*

SOC 226: Sociological Analysis

SOC 303: Analysis of Social Data

SOC 329: Field Research Methods

OR

GLA 393: Chicago Field Studies

3. Sociology 306 SOC 306: Sociological Theory
4. Four additional 300-level courses in sociology. Note: Only one quarter credit may be given for SOC 376, 399, and GLA 393.
5. Senior Research Seminar (2 quarters)**

SOC 398-1: Senior Research Seminar

SOC 398-2: Senior Research Seminar

6. Four related 300-level courses with adviser approval. Related departments are: African-American Studies, American Studies, Asian-American Studies, Anthropology, Communication Studies, Economics, Gender Studies, History, International Studies, Linguistics, Political Science, Philosophy, Psychology, and Statistics.

Minor Requirements

Minor in Sociological Studies:

Requirement Course Number and Title

3. Five additional 300-level courses in sociology. Note: Only one quarter credit may be given for SOC 376, 399, and GLA 393.

Minor in Sociological Research:

SOC 226: Sociological Analysis

3. Sociology 303 or 330, or an equivalent course.

SOC 303: Analysis of Social Data

OR

SOC 330: Basic Statistics for Social Research

4. Sociology 329 SOC 329: Field Research Methods
5. Two substantive 300-level courses in sociology. Note: Only one quarter credit may be given for SOC 376, 399, and GLA 393.

*It is recommended that students take SOC 226 in their freshman or sophomore year, and then SOC 303 and 329 in their junior year.

**In certain cases, students who are combining a major in sociology with a major in another field that also requires a senior research seminar may arrange to fulfill their seminar requirement in a combined project.

Declaring the Sociology Major or Minor:

Obtain forms from departmental office (1810 Chicago Avenue, Room 116)

Take completed forms to a departmental adviser (during office hours) and obtain adviser signature. Be sure to bring a copy of your transcripts with you (Obtainable on CAESAR). Then, give the signed carbon portion to the departmental office. To complete the declaration process, you will need to bring the form to your WCAS academic adviser. Check with the Office of Studies and Advising (491.7560) as to the location of your adviser, if you are not sure.
