Visiting Assistant Professor; Ph.D. Northwestern University 2006. Ghaziani’s areas of interest are cultural sociology, social movements, sexualities, and urban sociology. His work emphasizes anomic forces and meaning-making contests that characterize cultural change. His book The Dividends of Dissent: How Conflict and Culture Work in Lesbian and Gay Marches on Washington (University of Chicago Press 2008) examines the problem of infighting across 4 Washington marches that span 30 years of organizing efforts. Instead of being responsible for social disorganization and political decline, he argues that activists use infighting to engage in another conversation, a cultural, i.e., meaning-rich communiqué to their imagined, national community that specifies vital questions of who we are (our identity) and what we want (our strategy). Ghaziani’s new work looks at widespread heterosexual movement into recognizably gay urban enclaves, which he is studying to understand the fate of cultural diversity in light of integration and assimilation.
